How to Spot a Fake Rolex: 10 Checks Before You Buy

How to Spot a Fake Rolex: 10 Checks Before You Buy

Counterfeit Rolex watches have become remarkably good. Some “super fakes” fool even experienced collectors at first glance. These 10 checks help you spot the obvious warning signs before you buy, and explain why the final word should always come from a specialist.

At our showroom in the Dubai Gold District, every watch we buy and sell is inspected inside and out. We also regularly see watches that people bought elsewhere and were not sure about. The good news: most fakes can be recognised with a few simple checks. The bad news: the best ones can only be identified by opening the case.

The short answer

  • Check the details: cyclops magnification, rehaut engraving, crown etching in the crystal, dial printing and the seconds hand.
  • Check the paperwork and seller: matching serial numbers, a believable price, and a dealer with a real showroom.
  • For certainty, have the movement inspected by a watch specialist. No outside check replaces that.

10 Checks to Spot a Fake Rolex

1. The price is too good to be true

This is the most reliable warning sign of all. A genuine Rolex Daytona or GMT-Master II is never sold far below the market. If a seller offers a sought-after model for much less than everyone else, there is a reason, and it is rarely a good one. Our guide to Rolex prices in Dubai shows what to expect.

2. The cyclops lens over the date

On Rolex models with a date, the cyclops lens magnifies the date by about 2.5 times, so the number fills the lens. Many fakes use a weaker lens, so the date looks small and leaves space around it. The lens should also sit exactly centred over the date window.

3. The rehaut engraving

On modern Rolex watches, the inner ring between dial and crystal (the rehaut) is engraved with “ROLEX ROLEX ROLEX” all around, and the serial number at 6 o’clock. The letters should be crisp, evenly spaced and perfectly aligned with the minute markers.

4. The tiny crown etched in the crystal

Since the early 2000s, Rolex has laser-etched a tiny crown into the sapphire crystal just above the 6 o’clock marker. It is very hard to see with the naked eye; you usually need a loupe and the right angle of light. If you can see it easily, or it looks printed on, be careful.

5. Dial printing and finishing

Use a loupe on the dial text. On a genuine Rolex, the printing is razor sharp, the letters are perfectly even and the hour markers are cleanly finished and filled with lume. Blurry edges, uneven spacing, spelling mistakes or rough markers are typical signs of a fake.

6. The seconds hand

Modern Rolex movements beat at 28,800 vibrations per hour, eight steps per second, so the seconds hand glides smoothly. A hand that ticks once per second points to a quartz movement and therefore to a fake (Rolex’s quartz Oysterquartz models are a rare exception). Note that many fakes also glide smoothly, so a smooth hand alone proves nothing.

7. The caseback

Almost all Rolex Oyster watches have a solid, plain caseback without any engraving or window. A transparent caseback showing the movement, or decorative engravings, are red flags on most models.

8. Weight, bracelet and clasp

A genuine Rolex feels solid and dense. The bracelet links are solid, the end pieces fit the case without gaps, and the clasp closes with a precise, firm click. Rattling links, sharp edges or a light, hollow feel are suspicious.

9. Bezel and crown

On a Submariner, the rotating bezel turns in one direction only, with 120 clean, even clicks per full rotation and no play. The crown screws down smoothly and carries a sharp Rolex crown logo. A loose, gritty or bidirectional bezel is a warning sign.

10. Papers and serial numbers

The serial number on the warranty card must match the serial on the watch. But be aware: papers can be faked too, and genuine papers are sometimes paired with fake watches. Papers add value to a genuine watch; they do not prove that a watch is genuine.

Why Only an Expert Can Be 100% Sure

The best counterfeits now copy the dial, case, weight and even the look of the movement. The final proof is inside: a watch specialist opens the caseback and checks the calibre, its finishing and its parts. That is why buying from a dealer who inspects every watch, and stands behind it with a written guarantee, matters more than any checklist.

At Ilan Watches every watch is inspected by our specialists before it is offered, and every purchase comes with our authenticity guarantee and a 12-month warranty on the movement. If a watch is ever proven not to be authentic, you receive a full refund.

How to Protect Yourself When Buying a Rolex

  1. Buy from an established dealer with a physical showroom, not from anonymous online sellers.
  2. Get an authenticity guarantee in writing, with the reference and serial number on your invoice.
  3. Pay traceably, for example by card or bank transfer to a company account.
  4. See the watch in person before you pay, and compare it with a genuine example if you can.
  5. Be suspicious of pressure: “another buyer is waiting” is a classic sales trick.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fake Rolex have a sweeping seconds hand?

Yes. Many fakes use automatic movements, so the seconds hand glides just like on a genuine Rolex. A ticking seconds hand is a strong warning sign, but a sweeping one does not prove authenticity.

Does a Rolex with box and papers have to be real?

No. Boxes and papers can be faked, and genuine papers can be paired with a fake watch. Always check that the serial numbers match, and have the watch itself inspected.

How can I check if my Rolex is real?

The simple checks in this guide catch most fakes. For certainty, have the watch inspected by a specialist who opens the case and checks the movement. You are welcome to bring your watch to our showroom.

Are pre-owned Rolex watches from dealers in Dubai safe to buy?

Yes, if you buy from an established dealer with a showroom, a written authenticity guarantee and a clear return policy for watches that are not as described.
