Buying a Pre-Owned Rolex Submariner in Dubai
The Rolex Submariner was introduced in 1953 as a professional diver's watch and set the standard for the category. Its rotating bezel, luminous dial and Oyster case, today water-resistant to 300 metres, made it a tool for divers – and later one of the most recognisable luxury watches in the world.
Today the Submariner is available with and without a date, in steel, two-tone Rolesor and gold. At Ilan Watches in the Dubai Gold District, every watch is inspected by our specialists before it is offered, and you are welcome to view it in our showroom before you decide.
Our 5 watches in stock currently range from AED 13,342 to AED 36,759. All prices include a full inspection by our specialists.
The Rolex Submariner: Why It Was Created and What It Does
When scuba diving became popular in the early 1950s, divers needed a reliable way to know how long they had been underwater – their air supply depended on it. Rolex answered in 1953 with the Submariner, one of the first wristwatches built for diving.
Before a dive, the diver turns the bezel so that the triangle at zero lines up with the minute hand. During the dive, the minute hand then shows the elapsed time directly on the bezel. The bezel turns only anticlockwise: if it is knocked by accident, it can only show a longer dive time, never a shorter one – the safe direction.

What to Check When Buying a Used Submariner
- Box, papers and warranty date. A full set with the warranty card adds value and shows the purchase date.
- Case and bracelet condition. Look for sharp case edges and a tight bracelet. Heavy polishing reduces value.
- Bezel and insert. The unidirectional bezel should click firmly; ceramic inserts are scratch-resistant but can chip if dropped.
- Service history. Service papers from Rolex or a recognised watchmaker give extra confidence.
