What Is a Two-Tone Watch? Meaning, Types and How to Wear It

Two-tone Rolex watches: Datejust 36 steel and yellow gold, GMT-Master II steel and gold, Yacht-Master 37 steel and Everose gold
What Is a Two-Tone Watch? Meaning, Types and How to Wear It

A two-tone watch is a watch made from two different metals, most often stainless steel combined with gold. Typically the bezel, the crown and the centre links of the bracelet are gold, while the case and outer links are steel. Because the gold runs through the middle of the bracelet, many people simply call it a “two-tone bracelet” or “steel and gold”.

Two-tone watches sit between an all-steel sports watch and a full-gold watch: more eye-catching than steel, more understated and more affordable than solid gold. Below we explain the different types, which models are available, how to wear two-tone and what to look out for when buying one.

Two-tone at a glance

  • What it is: steel combined with gold (yellow, pink or white).
  • Why people choose it: the warmth of gold, the toughness of steel, at a lower price than full gold.
  • Popular models: Datejust, GMT-Master II, Yacht-Master, Submariner, Sky-Dweller.

What Does Two-Tone Mean?

“Two-tone” simply describes the two colours of metal you see on the watch. The steel gives strength and keeps the price lower; the gold adds warmth and a touch of luxury. On most two-tone watches the gold is used where the eye falls first: the bezel, the crown and the middle row of the bracelet.

Two-tone is not the same as gold-plated. On a quality two-tone watch, such as a Rolex, the gold parts are made of solid 18 ct gold, not a thin coating over steel. That is why two-tone watches keep their look for decades and why they cost noticeably more than steel models.

The Two Types of Two-Tone Rolex

Type Metals Look Examples in our stock
Steel and yellow gold Steel + 18 ct yellow gold Warm, classic, the best-known two-tone look Datejust 36 Green Roman, GMT-Master II
Steel and rose gold (Everose) Steel + 18 ct Everose (pink) gold Softer and more modern; pairs well with dark dials GMT-Master II Root Beer, Yacht-Master 37

Everose is the 18 ct rose gold alloy that Rolex makes in its own foundry; it was developed so that the pink colour does not fade over time.

Popular Two-Tone Models

  • Rolex Datejust – the classic two-tone watch, usually with a fluted gold bezel and a Jubilee bracelet. Available from 28 to 41 mm.
  • Rolex GMT-Master II – the sporty choice, in steel and yellow gold or in steel and rose gold (the “Root Beer”).
  • Rolex Yacht-Master – often in steel and rose gold, sporty and elegant at the same time.
  • Rolex Submariner – the two-tone Submariner with a blue dial is nicknamed “Bluesy”.
  • Sky-Dweller – Rolex’s annual-calendar travel watch, also available in steel and gold.

Other brands make two-tone watches too, for example Cartier, Tudor and Omega. At Ilan Watches you will find mostly Rolex two-tone models in stock.

Are Two-Tone Watches in Style?

Yes. After years in which all-steel sports watches dominated, two-tone has returned strongly, especially vintage-inspired combinations such as a Datejust on a Jubilee bracelet or the Root Beer GMT. In Dubai, where gold has always been part of the culture, two-tone has never really gone out of fashion.

Is two-tone or all-steel more timeless? Both are. Steel is the safer, more neutral choice; two-tone has more character. If your watch will be your only watch, think about what you usually wear: a two-tone watch goes especially well with gold jewellery, a wedding ring or a gold-buckled belt.

How to Wear a Two-Tone Watch

  • Match your metals loosely. A two-tone watch is the perfect bridge: it goes with both silver and gold jewellery.
  • Choose the dial for the occasion. Black, blue or green dials look sporty and modern; champagne, white and mother-of-pearl look dressier.
  • Office and evening: a two-tone Datejust is one of the most versatile watches you can own – smart enough for a suit, relaxed enough for the weekend.
  • Casual: a two-tone GMT-Master II or Yacht-Master works perfectly with a polo shirt or linen.

Caring for a Two-Tone Watch

Gold is softer than steel, so it shows small marks a little sooner. A few simple habits keep a two-tone watch looking good:

  • Rinse it with fresh water after the sea or the pool, and dry it with a soft cloth.
  • Avoid perfume and creams directly on the bracelet.
  • Let a specialist clean the bracelet from time to time – dirt between the links wears the gold faster.
  • Avoid heavy polishing: it removes gold and softens the edges. Our watch services include careful cleaning and light refinishing.

Buying a Pre-Owned Two-Tone Watch

Two-tone watches are often a smart pre-owned purchase. They typically cost less than comparable full-gold models, while the solid gold parts give them lasting value. When you buy, check in particular:

  • Wear on the gold – the centre links and the bezel show wear first.
  • Bracelet stretch – two-tone Jubilee bracelets can loosen over time.
  • Box, papers and service history – as with any Rolex, a full set adds value.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gold colours are available on a two-tone Rolex?

Two-tone Rolex watches combine steel with either yellow gold or rose gold (Everose). Yellow gold is the classic look; rose gold is softer and more modern.

Is the gold on a two-tone Rolex real?

Yes. On a genuine two-tone Rolex the gold parts are solid 18 ct gold, not plating.

Is a two-tone watch more expensive than steel?

Usually yes, because of the solid gold parts – but considerably less expensive than a full-gold version of the same model.

Can I sell or trade in my two-tone watch?

Yes. We buy two-tone watches and gladly take them in part exchange. Read how we value your watch.
