The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak: Why It Was Created and What It Does
Audemars Piguet presented the Royal Oak at the Basel fair in 1972. Designed by Gérald Genta, it was a luxury watch made of steel and priced higher than many gold watches – a bold idea at the time that created the luxury sports watch.
Its name comes from the Royal Navy ships called HMS Royal Oak, and the octagonal bezel with eight hexagonal screws recalls a ship's porthole. The Royal Oak is made for everyday wear, and its alternating brushed and polished surfaces are finished largely by hand.

- Movement. Calibre 4302 with about 70 hours of power reserve in the 15510; calibre 7121 with about 55 hours in the 16202 Jumbo.
- Water resistance. 50 metres, with a screw-down crown.
