Buying a Pre-Owned Rolex GMT-Master II in Dubai
The Rolex GMT-Master was created in 1955 for airline pilots who needed to read two time zones at once. The GMT-Master II followed in 1983 with an independently adjustable hour hand – ideal for travellers between Dubai, Europe and Asia.
Its two-colour bezels have earned famous nicknames such as “Pepsi”, “Batman” and “Root Beer”. At Ilan Watches in the Dubai Gold District, every watch is inspected by our specialists before it is offered, and you are welcome to view it in our showroom before you decide.
Our 7 watches in stock currently range from AED 60,000 to AED 100,000. All prices include a full inspection by our specialists.
The Rolex GMT-Master II: Why It Was Created and What It Does
In the 1950s, jet aircraft began to cross several time zones in a single flight. Rolex developed the GMT-Master in 1955 together with Pan American World Airways, so that pilots could read their home time and the local time at a glance. The two-coloured bezel helps to tell day hours from night hours.
The GMT-Master II has an extra 24-hour hand that points to the 24-hour bezel and shows a second time zone – for example the time in Dubai while you are in London. When you travel, you move only the hour hand in one-hour steps with the crown; the minutes, seconds and 24-hour hand keep running, and the date follows forwards or backwards. Turn the bezel as well, and you can read a third time zone.

What to Check When Buying a Used GMT-Master II
- Box, papers and warranty date. A full set with the warranty card adds value and shows the purchase date.
- Case and bracelet condition. Look for sharp case edges and a tight bracelet. Heavy polishing reduces value.
- GMT function. The 24-hour hand and the independently set hour hand should both work smoothly, and the bezel should rotate in both directions with firm clicks.
- Service history. Service papers from Rolex or a recognised watchmaker give extra confidence.
