Buying a Pre-Owned Rolex Datejust in Dubai
The Rolex Datejust was introduced in 1945 as the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial. The Cyclops magnifying lens over the date followed in the 1950s and became a Rolex signature.
No other Rolex offers as many combinations: four sizes, fluted or smooth bezels, Oyster or Jubilee bracelets and countless dials. At Ilan Watches in the Dubai Gold District, every watch is inspected by our specialists before it is offered, and you are welcome to view it in our showroom before you decide.
Our 22 watches in stock currently range from AED 24,000 to AED 105,000. All prices include a full inspection by our specialists.
The Rolex Datejust: Why It Was Created and What It Does
Rolex introduced the Datejust in 1945, its 40th anniversary year. It brought together three of its inventions – the waterproof Oyster case, the self-winding Perpetual rotor and chronometer certification – and was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial.
The date changes instantly at midnight and can be set quickly with the crown. The Cyclops lens, added in 1953, magnifies the date two and a half times so it is easy to read. The Jubilee bracelet was designed especially for the Datejust.
Key Features
- Movement. Calibre 3235 with about 70 hours of power reserve in the current Datejust 36 and 41.
- Date. Instant date change at midnight, magnified by the Cyclops lens.
- Water resistance. 100 metres, with a screw-down crown.
- Bezel. Smooth, or fluted in white or yellow gold – the fluted bezel is a Datejust signature.
- Bracelet. Oyster or Jubilee, with the Easylink comfort extension of about 5 mm.

What to Check When Buying a Used Datejust
- Box, papers and warranty date. A full set with the warranty card adds value and shows the purchase date.
- Case and bracelet condition. Look for sharp case edges and a tight bracelet. Heavy polishing reduces value.
- Date change and crown. The date should change cleanly around midnight, and the screw-down crown should close smoothly.
- Service history. Service papers from Rolex or a recognised watchmaker give extra confidence.
