Buying a Luxury Watch in Dubai: 7 Things Most Buyers Overlook

Most people compare model, price and looks when they buy a watch. But in Dubai, a few other things matter just as much: the climate, the paperwork, where the watch comes from and how well it will hold its value. Here are seven points that buyers often overlook.

Dubai is one of the best places in the world to buy a luxury watch. The choice is huge, from authorised boutiques in the malls to specialist dealers in the Dubai Gold District. But because the market is so big, it also pays to be careful. These are the questions we recommend every buyer asks before paying.

At a glance: 7 things to check

  • Is the watch suited to heat, sweat and water?
  • Which strap or bracelet works in the Dubai climate?
  • Has the watch been inspected, and do the numbers match the papers?
  • What warranty comes with it?
  • What is the condition, and has it been polished?
  • Will you pay customs duties if you take it home?
  • How well does the model hold its value?

1. Heat, Humidity and Water Resistance

In summer, temperatures in Dubai regularly pass 45 °C and humidity can be very high. A quality mechanical watch handles this well, but water resistance matters more than many buyers think: sweat, the pool, the sea and sudden temperature changes from air-conditioned rooms to the outdoors all put the seals of a watch to the test.

Look for at least 100 metres of water resistance if you want to wear the watch every day, and keep in mind that seals age. If you buy a pre-owned watch, ask when it was last checked for water resistance.

2. The Right Strap or Bracelet

Leather straps are elegant but suffer in the heat: sweat makes them wear out faster. For daily wear in Dubai, most clients choose a metal bracelet or a high-quality rubber strap, such as the Rolex Oysterflex, which is designed for exactly these conditions. A leather strap is a good choice for a dress watch worn in the evening or in air-conditioned offices. Read more in What Is a Dress Watch?

3. Authenticity and Matching Numbers

This is the most important point of all. Fakes have become very good, and box and papers can be faked too. Before you buy, make sure the watch itself has been inspected by specialists: case, dial, movement and the serial and reference numbers, which must match the warranty card.

4. Warranty

A new watch from an authorised dealer comes with the manufacturer’s international warranty, which is valid worldwide. A recent pre-owned watch may still be covered by the remaining manufacturer warranty, which you can see from the date on the warranty card. Also ask what the seller guarantees. At Ilan Watches, every watch comes with an authenticity guarantee and a 12-month warranty on the movement.

It is also worth knowing where the nearest authorised service centre for your brand is located, especially if you live outside the UAE. Most major brands have service centres in Dubai.

5. Condition and Polishing

With pre-owned watches, condition makes a big difference to the price. Ask about scratches, the state of the bracelet and whether the case has been polished. Many collectors prefer an unpolished case with light signs of wear over a heavily polished one, because polishing removes metal and can soften the original sharp edges. A good seller states the condition, the year and the scope of delivery clearly.

6. Customs and Taxes When You Take the Watch Home

The UAE charges 5% VAT, but many visitors forget about the rules in their home country. If you buy a watch in Dubai and bring it home, your home country may charge import duties and taxes above a certain value. Check the rules before you travel. If you have the watch shipped, the same applies: we ship within the UAE and worldwide, and any customs duties or taxes in the destination country are paid by the buyer.

7. Value Retention

Not every luxury watch holds its value. Brands such as Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet are among the most stable, especially their classic steel sports models. Many other watches lose a large part of their value once they leave the boutique. Box and papers, condition and service history also affect the price when you sell later. Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to buy a pre-owned luxury watch in Dubai?

Yes, if you buy from a specialist who inspects every watch and gives you a written authenticity guarantee. Always check that the numbers on the watch match the papers.

Which strap is best for the Dubai climate?

For daily wear, a metal bracelet or a high-quality rubber strap. Leather straps wear out faster in heat and humidity.

Do I pay tax on a watch bought in Dubai?

The UAE charges 5% VAT. If you take the watch to another country, import duties and taxes may apply there, depending on that country’s rules.

Can I see the watch before I buy?

Yes. You are welcome to view any watch in our showroom in the Dubai Gold District before you decide.
